Poems for John Darnielle: Going to Norwalk

Two weeks into the year, fifty more to go. I hope whoever reads this had a nice start to the year. I’m in disbelief that I’ve actually stuck with this little routine for this long, even if its only a fraction of the book (We haven’t even gotten out of the Beautiful Rat Sunset era yet). This might be the one I’m most unsure about so far, to be honest, even if it riffs nicely off the imagery of the song. I think of this one as a bit of a modern Orpheus/Eurydice situation, but the aftermath. This is another one of those cases where I can hear a song in the lines. Hiding in there, sung with that oh so characteristic JD cadence.

My music recommendation for today is Going to Norwalk

Hyperbaric Chamber Failure

I can see the Apollo missions from here
And the mirrors they planted on that silver platter
reflect my face with minimal delay.
Just enough for me to see myself blink
and that breaks that final, tenuous link.

I hear the rodents scurry
and what they say is true:
It’s barely a place,
barely a place without you.

When I make my move
Try to keep a steady hand,
my aim is true and clear,
I move exactly as I planned.

I’ll smash those shiny shards
lay waste to the moon
If it finally means
darkness in this room.

I reach out my hand,
steady myself on the door
I can’t turn away
can’t stand to see it anymore.
